The properties of WDS TD-books and of the WD-Reader program are explained below, using example screenshots. Only the most important features are described. Consult the help files of the WD-Reader program for more details. Click on any one of the thumbnails below to see the fullsize screenshot. Use the Back button of your browser to return to this page.

This screenshot shows
the main WD-Reader Window after a TD-book, in this case the
Collected Stories of Beatrix Potter, has been opened. The title bar
displays the title of the opened book and the title of the first
page. The structure of the book is shown in the index in the upper
left pane. The main pane to the right displays the contents of the
first page. The book can be navigated using the arrow buttons of the toolbar, by clicking on a page name in the index, or by clicking on a hyperlink in the text of the first page. Note that the Play button of the toolbar is not enabled, which means that no audio is available for the first page.

This screenshot shows another page of the Beatrix Potter Stories. Note that the current sentence is marked in blue. Note also that the Play button of the toolbar is enabled, which means that audio (coming from a mp3 file) is available for this page.
The WD-Reader program can be used to play audio in two different ways: in Sentence Mode or in Continuous Mode:
Sentence Mode : In sentence mode the user of the program is "in control": the user determines when to go to which sentence of the text. As soon as a sentence is activated, for example by pressing the down arrow, the associated sound clip is played (the spoken text for the sentence in question can be heared).
Continuous Mode : Continuous mode playing is started by clicking on the Play / Pause button of the toolbar or by pressing the F2 key. Continuous mode starts at the current sentence. In continuous mode, once started, the WD-Reader program is "in control": when the clip for the current sentence is completed, the next sentence is activated and the associated clip is played. This continues until the end of the book has been reached or the user interrupts the process. The page text scrolls during playing, and pages are turned, synchronous with the sound. The sentence played is continuously highlighted in blue in the text (and displayed in the magnifier panel if this panel has been made visible, see the next screenshot).

This screenshot shows
the same page of the Beatrix Potter Stories, with the magnifier
panel enabled. The font size and the number of lines for the text in
the magnifier panel can easily be adjusted. About the sentence concept: note that the current sentence does not correspond to a line of the text nor to an alinea (paragraph) of the text. The text is divided into sentences by the editor of the book, using sentence separator characters that are invisible in the WD-Reader text window.

This screenshot
illustrates the capability of WD-Reader for multi-language
TD-books. Two translations can be shown side by side.
The text in both translations remains synchronized. The current sentence of either translation can be displayed in the magnifier panel. |
